Moving to a Small Town After Life in the Big City

If you were born and bred in the city, chances are that the idea of moving to a small town was not the first thought you had when you decided it was time to buy a new home. You probably first spent hours trawling through listings for all the different houses for sale in London, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds, Birmingham and every other big British city imaginable and found the choice uninspiring – no matter how beautiful the houses are, they’re still surrounded by the hubbub of the city.

Moving to the country after a life lived in a city can be a restorative experience; the pace is usually quite slow and comfortable in a small town. You’ll find you probably won’t have to wake up at the crack of dawn just to make it to work on time – there’s little to no congestion problems and your workplace may very well be within walking distance of your new home. This can often mean you get more sleep at night and the quieter surroundings mean this sleep is normally more restful. If you still want to work in the city, commuting is still entirely possible from most towns in the UK.

Although most small towns have supermarkets that stock most big name brands, you may still find that you don’t have the same amount of choice that you have in the city. This is not a huge disadvantage, however, as you can opt to shop online and have your groceries delivered to your home by many supermarkets these days, drive or take public transport to a larger town supermarket or, if you really want to get into the spirit of country living, grow your own fruit and vegetables in your very own garden!

If you have, or are considering having, children then a small town is the perfect place to bring them up. The air is cleaner and there are more safe places for them to play meaning they will lead healthier lifestyles. The lower incidence of crime will make you feel at ease about them staying out late to play with friends and there will be fewer negative distractions in their life to disturb their development. The only downside to bringing your kids up in the countryside is when it comes time for them to fly the nest they will likely head straight back to the cities, as this is where the best universities are usually based around.

Before considering any of the many houses for sale in London, consider that small town living offers the opportunity for a peaceful, quiet life free of the noise and clamour of the city while still leaving you connected to the modern world.
