NEW HAVEN — One by one, count by count, the middle-aged jury foreman softly informed defendant Steven J. Hayes, surviving victim Dr. William Petit Jr. and the local and national media Tuesday that Hayes was guilty of murdering Petit’s wife and two daughters in their Cheshire home three years ago.
